Ione returned to Alamosa to attend Adams State College graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Over a 35 year career, Ione taught instrumental music to junior and senior high school students, and served in an administrative role in junior high with discipline and supervision. Her iconic Aspen trees and bear are on display as the first alley art created in the community. Ione was committed to doing what she could to see that her community, Walsenburg, would improve and prosper.
